Strephon, the son of Iolanthe, a fairy who married a mortal, is madly in love with Phyllis, a Ward in Chancery who cannot marry without the Lord Chancellor’s consent. Finding that the entire House of Lords have rival claims for Phyllis’ hand, Strephon summons the aid of his mother’s fairy sisters and cousins with ensuing havoc in Westminster. Against this intriguing backdrop, Gilbert weaves a plot which pokes fun at both Houses of Parliament with many an echo to be found in today’s political arena. Sullivan provides some of his most delightful music to this sparkling and evergreen opera.
